When I’ve had the occasion to talk with other people who are in bondage to homosexuality, and even to pornography, I have consistently been told that they have been seeing a counselor for these issues. My question is, why?
If I have a mental illness, I don’t go to a Christian for discipleship for help with it. Instead, I would go to a psychologist or the like. On the other hand, if I have a sin problem, then I’m going to speak with someone who loves Jesus and has some spiritual maturity to them and that person, if wise, will refer me to the One who sets the captives free - Jesus Christ.
In 2026, the norm is for those struggling with sexual sins to go to a therapist, who I’ve found most often give them behavior modification techniques, after trying to uncover “trauma.” When I question this, I am typically told that the counselor is for the clinical issues, and the implication is Jesus and His Word is just not going to work.
Here is the problem. If the modern counseling room was the answer, then why do I end up talking with them after they’ve been going down that path for some time, yet they are no better off than they were, and oftentimes they’re actually worse than they were?
Only Jesus breaks chains. Therapists may (or may not) have some place in some situations, but I choose Jesus. I know, I know… Wayne, you’re being simplistic. You just don’t know what you’re talking about.
In my life, when God showed up and turned my life towards Him and to Christ, then that is when I was set free. Years of therapy only made things worse. I believe that only Jesus saves, only Jesus sets free, only Jesus forgives, and only Jesus replaces hearts of stone and replaces them with hearts of flesh.
I will die on this hill. After all, He who the Son sets free is free indeed.
I have known a lot of people with issues in the area of sexual immorality who’ve been to the cross and set free. And I’ve know a lot of people who have been to the therapist and yet some part still remains, and in many cases things are as bad as they ever were, if not far worse. If a person kneels at the base of the cross and leaves their sin(s) there, they are free. That is my view, and I believe it is biblical.
If you’re suicidal and need help, you should seek it out. But If you’re wanting freedom from LGBTQ sins or other sexual immorality, in my view you should seek out your pastor or someone who can help and with the help of the Holy Spirit, you will be pointed to the One who always frees, always forgives and always cleanses those who seek Him in humility and with a whole heart.
